BIRD PARK
Bird Park is a 42-acre green space bounded by Washington Road, Beadling Road and Mayfair Drive. The park’s assets include a network of natural surface trails, some hardened with gravel or wood chips, and all rated “easy.” There is also a pavilion with 8 tables (which may be reserved via Mt. Lebanon); a fire circle with wood storage; John Doctor Field; and two portable restrooms. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on-leash; pet clean-up stations are available near the soccer field and the Bird Park Drive parking lot.
The park is named for Thomas Bird, the first Mt. Lebanon resident to die in the Vietnam War.
It has been the site since 1984 for School in the Park, a science education program the Conservancy runs in collaboration with Mt. Lebanon School District. Each May, school district third graders spend a day in the park learning elements of their science curriculum.
An intermittent stream runs east to west through the park. Trails in the western side pass numerous old beech and oak trees. The eastern side of the park, which is more degraded with invasive plants, and has been a focal area of the Conservancy’s volunteer efforts. This includes a 2022-23 forest rehabilitation project at the stream headwaters, called the Riparian Zone Project, which was mainly funded through a $16,000 grant from the American Water Charitable Foundation. Look for our native tree, shrub and perennials planting throughout the Bird Park.
Trail map kiosks can be found at the Washington Road, Beadling Road and Bird Park Drive entrances. Parking lots can be found along Beadling Road and at the end of Bird Park Drive.
