Winter Seed Sowing

The weather outside may not be good for gardening but you can still get ready for Spring! Join Mt Lebanon Nature Conservancy board members for an interactive workshop on sowing seeds in the winter using recycled containers.

Leave the workshop with a container of sown native seeds. Your plants will be ready to go into the ground in the Spring. Seeds, soil and containers provided. Bring your own gardening gloves (optional).

The workshop will take place at the Unitarian Universalist Church of the South Hills (1240 Washington Rd). Please sign up using this registration Link (required).

Winter Hike at Kane Woods

Join PA Master Naturalist Sarah Levinthal on a winter hike through Kane Woods. This is an excellent opportunity to explore a green space in Scott Township and see the work that The Scott Conservancy has put into maintaining the park. This hike involves uneven terrain and unpaved trails. Hiking shoes recommended. Please dress for the weather. These are off-leash dog-friendly trails.

This hike is suitable for adults and families. All children must be accompanied by a supervising adult.

Please meet at the Whiskey Point parking lot on the corner of Scrubgrass Road and Main St. Parking is limited, so please consider carpooling.

Annual Meeting and Public Lecture: Trees as a Tool for Neighborhood Transformation

Join us for our annual meeting and lecture, as we celebrate our 40th anniversary! 

Our lecture will feature Clara Kitongo, Tree Pittsburgh's Tree Equity Manager. Clara and her team work with Pittsburgh's under-resourced communities to mobilize trees for urban renewal. Learn about policies and practices that have long perpetuated urban forest disparities across the city and how better policies and more urban trees can transform our city into a thriving metropolis that benefits everyone. 

Light refreshments will be served after the lecture, so stay and chat with Board members, and learn how you can get involved!

Location: Mt Lebanon Public Library, Meeting Room A

Bird Park - Trish's Woodland Garden

Join Mt. Lebanon Nature Conservancy volunteers as we plant a memorial garden in memory of one of our board members, Trish Beckjord. Trish was a dear friend and board member at MLNC for several years. She was a passionate and dedicated advocate for conservation efforts and the importance of restoring ecological biodiversity through planting native species in our Parks. Trish created space for others and fostered their learning by sharing her time, talents, and extensive knowledge, for the betterment of her friends and community. Our native plant sale was Trish’s concept, she remained an integral part of its planning up until her passing. She will be fondly remembered in gardens, wildflowers, and wildlife.

Meet at the Beadling Road entrance to Bird Park. Note parking may be limited due to other events at the Park so remember to give yourself enough time to find parking.

Please join us as we plant a beautiful perennial garden in memory of our dear friend, Trish.

Learn why native plants are an important tool for conservation in our own gardens. Find out how to select and prepare your native plants to thrive. Hear from Mt. Lebanon Nature Conservancy’s VP Programs Sarada Sangameswaran and Arcadia Natives Laura Ashley, as well as a panel of several local residents who have transformed their lawns into meadows and rain gardens. This event is hosted by Lebogreen, as part of their sustainability speaker series. There will be native plant prizes and free seeds, as well as native plants for sale.

Native Plant Sale

Our live Native Plant Sale is back and scheduled for Saturday, May 18 from 10am -1pm at Sunnyhill Unitarian Universalist Church. The perennials will include some choices suitable for sun and some for shady conditions. All plants are from North Creek Nurseries, a well-regarded and native plant specialty grower in Southeastern PA. Plants ordered online will be available for pickup at the May 18 sale.

Volunteer with our Native Plant Sale

We are looking for volunteers both on the day before the Native Plant Sale (Friday, May 17) and on the day of the sale (Saturday, May 18).

On Friday, May 17, we will be cutting up plastic flats into strips of plants. Our plants arrive in flats of either 32 or 50 plants, and we need to cut these flats into “strips” for the sale. We have some cutting tools but need many helping hands! If you have extra scissors or other tools that you feel can cut through plastic, please bring them along.

On Saturday, May 18, we will need volunteers on the day of the sale to help with set-up, organizing, and handing out orders along with lots of other tasks.

Celebrate Migratory Bird Day!

Did you know that May 11 is World Migratory Bird Day? Join us at Bird Park for a guided bird walk, activities and more! Meet an ornithologist (a person who studies birds) and learn about the profession. Try on a pair of binoculars and explore the tools of the trade. Discover the threats birds face and the steps you can take in your own yard to help them thrive. There will be hands-on activities for all ages.

The event is a partnership between the Mt Lebanon Nature Conservancy and Communitopia, as part of ReMake Learning Days.  The event is free and no registration is required. All ages are welcome!

Stop by anytime between 9-11 at the Bird Park Fire Circle, at the end of Bird Park Drive.

Early birds - we will have a guided bird walk at 8 am - suitable for teens and adults!

Bird Park - School in the Park Trail Prep Day

Mt. Lebanon Nature Conservancy invites you to join us as we do some trail prep work on various trails at Bird Park to prepare for School in the Park. School in the Park, a program of the Mt. Lebanon Nature Conservancy in partnership with the Mt. Lebanon School District and the Municipality, began in 1984 and we are pleased to continue this tradition.

It is an interactive nature discovery program for Mt. Lebanon’s 3rd grade students held each spring in Bird Park. The program’s activities support the school district’s third grade science curriculum and provide an opportunity for students to learn about native plants and animals in their woodland habitats and their connections among all living things.

We will be hauling and spreading gravel and mulch to mark the trails and repair muddy locations. Please dress appropriately in a long-sleeved shirt and pants. Bring work gloves, large shovel, rake and/or pitchfork if you have it as well as a water bottle. Meet at the Bird Park pavilion.
