The Dirty Dozen: Invasive Plants From Your Yard to Our Natural Areas

A presentation by Trish Beckjord and the Mt Lebanon Nature Conservancy

Does your yard give safe harbor to a plant that creates problems in our green spaces and natural areas? It might be the one you dutifully trim and shape or the one whose flower and fruit you enjoy seeing. The horticultural industry has inadvertently marketed a number of introduced species over the years, sometimes even with good intentions.  These plants – including trees and shrubs – have escaped our yards and are now causing a host of problems in our local, regional and state natural areas.

In this presentation, Trish Beckjord, a landscape architect, member of the Mount Lebanon Nature Conservancy, and advocate for including more native plants in our gardens, will identify some of the culprits that might be quite at home in your yard, the problems they cause and some attractive alternatives for you to consider.
